Ambrotose AO - page II - The Antioxidant

Posted: 29 Aug 2013 01:42 PM PDT
You hear about them all the time,
but do you really know what they are
and why they're so important?

Antioxidants are nutrients that are found in our foods which may help prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body. When our cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals which can cause damage. Antioxidants may prevent and repair damage done by free radicals. Oxidative damage has been associated with a lot of health problems.
What are some well-known antioxidants?

  • Vitamin A - found in carrots, squash, broccoli, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, kale, collard greens, cantaloupe, peaches and apricots.

  • Vitamin C - found in oranges, lines, green peppers, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, strawberries and tomatoes.

  • Vitamin E - found in nuts and seeds, whole grains, green leafy vegetables and vegetable oil.

  • Selenium - found in fish and shellfish, red meat, grains, legumes, eggs, chicken and garlic.

  • Some antioxidants are phytochemicals — naturally occurring plant substances — such as:

  • Flavonoids/polyphenols - found in soy, purple grapes, pomegranates, cranberries and tea.

  • Lycopene - found in tomato and tomato products, pink grapefruit and watermelon.

  • Lutein - found in kale, broccoli, kiwi, Brussel's sprouts and spinach.

  • Lignan - found in flax seed, oatmeal, barley and rye.

  • As you can see antioxidants are in lots of healthy foods, particularly grains and fruits and vegetables. While it's best to get as many as possible from whole foods, a good antioxidant supplement can be very beneficial.

COPPELL, Texas, Dec 01, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Mannatech, Incorporated, a global pioneer in the development of high-quality health, weight and fitness, and skin care solutions based on nutritional science, announced the results of a newly published randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled crossover study printed in Nutrition Journal that demonstrates Ambrotose AO(R) capsules taken at the daily dosage of four capsules per day increases resting blood antioxidant capacity and may enhance post exercise antioxidant capacity.* +

"Mannatech's Ambrotose AO capsules are formulated with precise levels of water soluble and fat soluble antioxidants. It is now one of the most scientifically validated antioxidant products available to consumers," said Mannatech's Co-CEO and Chief Science Officer, Robert A. Sinnott, MNS, Ph.D. "This newly published study confirms the effectiveness of Mannatech's proprietary Ambrotose AO product for diminishing the effects of oxidative stress in the human body."

In this 21-day independent human study, Dr. Richard J. Bloomer and scientists from the University of Memphis showed Ambrotose AO capsules (four capsules/day for three weeks) significantly increased two measures of antioxidant capacity -- Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) and Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC) -- in the blood of 25 healthy men and women at rest.* Compared to placebo, Ambrotose AO capsules also caused a greater increase in blood ORAC at 30 minutes post-exercise.* (1)

The results further validate the study previously published in May by Dr. Stephen P. Myers conducted in Australia for five weeks on 21 healthy adults that showed four capsules per day of Ambrotose AO dietary supplement was safe and raised serum Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity ORAC.* (2)

To ensure that adequate amounts of antioxidants are included in your diet, Dr. Sinnott offers the following tips:

For the best antioxidant protection under all conditions, you should have both fat-soluble and water-soluble antioxidant compounds in proper amounts. Your body has both aqueous (water-based) and lipid (fat-based) components and they both need protection from oxidative stress. Fresh fruits and vegetables are usually good sources of natural antioxidants, but if you do not eat at least five to nine servings a day, you may want to include a high quality antioxidant dietary supplement daily. Don't be fooled by high "ORAC" values touted on some product labels or marketing materials. These values are often calculated from laboratory experiments and do not necessarily translate to health value since some antioxidants are not absorbed into the body. Overdoing anything is generally not a good idea, antioxidants included. Taking too much of an antioxidant can actually cause it to become a pro-oxidant and cause oxidative stress. Stay away from "megadose" antioxidant products and choose an antioxidant with published human clinical studies showing health benefits.

Currently, Mannatech holds more than 45 patents in 30 countries for the technology related to Ambrotose complex. In addition, many of Mannatech's products are based on Real Food Technology(SM) solutions, which provide consumers with products that contain standardized levels of natural and plant-sourced nutrients.
