  • Everyone knows that the aloe vera plant has many beneficial properties for the human body. But did you know that not all aloe vera products are alike?

Here at Mannatech, we use only the inner leaf gel of aloe plants sourced from tropical plantations in the rainforest nation of Costa Rica. We use a special gel extraction method, unique to Mannatech, which retains the aloe gel’s most potent properties after being removed from the plant itself.

Most aloe vera products lose their effectiveness over time due to the inexpensive and harsh processing methods used by other companies to obtain aloe gel powder. But Mannatech processes the gel to protect the rich glyconutrient Acemannans in a way that is essential for lasting benefits. Additionally, consumers should be aware that there are companies manipulating and modifying the true definition of Acemannan in an attempt to make their lower molecular weight aloe products appear to be Acemannan.

The aloe vera is a marvel of a plant, known for having healing and soothing properties when the gel is applied to sunburns and minor cuts. But Mannatech’s pure aloe vera gel extract is also beneficial when ingested. Mannatech offers a variety of products containing aloe vera gel, such as skin care and our essential carrier oils. However, our core glyconutrient technology in our Ambrotose powders, rich in our aloe gel extract, has been shown to support healthy digestion and has demonstrated immune support and improvements in cognitive function in human clinical trials. * Furthermore, our special Acemannan-rich aloe gel extract,
Manapol® powder, can support cell-to-cell communication, which can benefit the entire body.*

Mannatech’s Emprizone® Aloe Gel — A Great Moisturizer for All Skin Types

The aloe vera plant is often used to treat cuts and sunburns. However, Mannatech’s Emprizone gel takes standard aloe vera gel benefits to the next level by also serving as an excellent moisturizing facial mask.

Here is why you should use Emprizone in your daily skincare regimen:

  • Emprizone dries quickly after application, making it perfect for oily or problematic skin types because it does not leave behind a heavy, oily cream feeling.
  • It also locks in moisture due to its natural botanical ingredients, which is important for fighting dry skin.
  • The gel's cooling feature leaves skin feeling refreshed and does not clog the pores.
  • Emprizone contains Ambrotose® Complex, a unique formulation containing important glyconutrients needed for soothing irritated skin due to waxing or shaving.†

Aloe vera (inner leaf gel powder)

Aloe vera inner leaf gel powder is the powder obtained from the freeze-dried gel from the leaves of the aloe vera plant, Aloe barbadensis.

For centuries, the plant aloe vera has been used by cultures for its beneficial effects on human health (1).

Today aloe vera gel continues to be used in supplements, foods, beverages, and cosmetics. Aloe leaves consist of two major parts, the outer leaf epidermis and the inner leaf gel, which are very different in their chemical composition and properties. Aloe gel is obtained from the inner portion of the leaves.

Aloe gel is rich in nutrients and contains an abundant supply of glycoproteins and mono-, oligo - and polysaccharides. Monosaccharide constituents include glucose, mannose, galacturonic acid, glucuronic acid, galactose, arabinose, fucose, glucosamine, fructose, rhamnose and xylose (2).

Much of the health benefits observed by the use of aloe vera gel may be attributed to its high molecular weight polysaccharides. Before a process was developed to stabilize aloe vera gel or extracts, fresh preparations were regarded as being required for any therapeutic efficacy (3). It has now been shown that careful drying of aloe vera gel can retain the polysaccharide content important for producing many of its health benefits (4).

    What is Acemannan?
According to Dr. Steve Nugent, Mannatech’s Senior Global Wellness Director and Chairman of Mannatech’s Global Scientific Advisory Board, "Aloe vera inner leaf gel has been used for thousands of years by cultures all over the world, so its benefits are generally well recognized. However, even most scientists do not understand the full science behind what is known as Acemannan. Ordinary aloe inner leaf gel powder really doesn’t contain mannans that meet the scientific definition of Acemannan — which is a long-chain mannose-rich saccharide from aloe that has a molecular weight of at least one million Daltons (Da) and a molecular structure which differs very significantly from ordinary aloe inner leaf gel powder. It is both the molecular weight and the molecular structure which gives Mannatech’s Manapol powder its extraordinary and scientifically documented benefits. *

"Other aloe products claiming to contain Acemannan do not exceed a maximum of 400,000 Daltons in molecular weight and therefore by definition are not Acemannan. Lower quality glucomannans derived from aloe vera inner leaf gel have a typical molecular weight of 666.6. Potential health benefits of aloe gel glucomannans have not been validated, in comparison with the well-documented and powerful results seen in more than 20 years of scientific study with product containing Mannatech’s true Acemannan, trademarked as Manapol, which has consistently more than 1 million Daltons in molecular weight. There simply is no mannan extracted from aloe vera inner leaf gel that can produce even a fraction of the results of Manapol. It is more than our special growing methods; it is our proprietary process of extraction and stabilization that results in the only true Acemannan in the world. Furthermore, Mannatech has done original scientific studies on human beings with our Ambrotose products for more than 20 years, while many other companies simply cite studies on product ingredients.

"If you want the best possible support for your health from an aloe vera product, the scientific evidence leaves you with only one choice and that is Mannatech’s Manapol," * says Dr. Nugent.

Every product has a story. This is ours.

Recently, Mannatech announced its exclusive, continuing relationship with Natural Aloe Costa Rica, the supplier of Mannatech’s Manapol. Natural Aloe Costa Rica has worked closely with Mannatech for many years to develop the most potent and purest aloe vera gel extract available. This includes its innovative and proprietary extraction processes that ensures the gel extract is as pure and potent as possible. Additionally, Natural Aloe Costa Rica employs cutting edge farming techniques that produce aloe vera plants which help yield a higher volume of aloe gel containing Acemannans.

No other aloe product in the marketplace contains Manapol.
Mannatech is the only company that owns the rights to this unique ingredient, making our aloe-containing products the purest and most potent of any others on the market.

Dr. Nugent said that while suppliers can provide their sub-standard aloe vera products to the market at a substantial discount, what the consumer receives is far from the promise that company marketers make. In some cases, the products being pushed by other companies can hardly be considered aloe vera, and those products certainly cannot provide the healthful benefits that Mannatech products deliver.*

"We owe it to our customers and the credibility of the nutritional supplement industry to provide the best quality aloe vera products at the highest level of purity possible from the most reliable source," said Dr. Nugent. "It is like anything else, if the offer seems too good to be true, then it is likely not true. So be cautious about companies offering cheap prices on aloe vera products that are simply not cheap to produce, because it is also true that you get what you pay for."

Mannatech takes great pains to provide its customers with real, beneficial aloe vera-based products. This includes transparency down to the plant in the ground. A big part of the transparency promise Mannatech makes is tied to the technology and supply Mannatech painstakingly developed through the years. For example, recently Mannatech announced it has secured its continuing source of Manapol with an exclusive deal with Natural Aloe Costa Rica.

Natural Aloe Costa Rica has worked closely with Mannatech for many years to develop the most potent and purest aloe vera gel extracts available. This supplier is unique for its ability to deliver pure, potent and legitimate aloe vera extracts for a number of reasons:

  • It farms in Costa Rica's volcanic soils, which are very nutrient-dense.

  • The aloe is harvested in low light conditions just after dawn or before dusk because aloe polysaccharides can degrade with sunlight.

  • The aloe vera leaves it harvests are processed all within the same day; the aloe doesn't have time to degrade

  • Aloe vera is grown organically in Costa Rica, and the acemannan content is very high

  • The innovative and proprietary extraction process ensures the gel extract is as pure and potent as possible

  • Natural Aloe Costa Rica uses farming techniques that produce aloe vera plants that yield a higher volume of
    aloe gel containing acemannan

  • Manapol has the highest level of mannose-rich polysaccharides tested thus far.

  • So for those seeking products that are derived from real aloe vera gel, Mannatech suggests taking a long look at the source of aloe vera. If a company stands behind their product, they should be transparent about its suppliers.

The next time you reach for aloe on your local store shelf, think twice about the source and if you’re getting all the benefits possible from the product. Then contact a Mannatech Independent Associate to try our many patent-protected health and wellness products.

Dr. Sinnott Discusses Aloe Vera Gel with Industry Leaders
    June 23, 2011

When the Natural Products Insider--a trade publication for marketers, manufacturers and formulators of dietary supplements, healthy foods and cosmeceuticals—was looking for industry leaders to share their thoughts about aloe vera, former Mannatech’s Co-CEO and Chief Science Officer, Dr. Rob Sinnott, was invited to participate in the discussion. The resulting article, "Aloe veritas," is a comprehensive look at aloe vera, with an emphasis on its economic impact, topical and oral effects, and regulatory issues.

The polysaccharide acemannan was frequently mentioned as the gel constituent critically important for product effects. Bill McAnalley, the inventor of Mannatech’s Ambrotose® complex, first patented the extraction and applications of acemannan from aloe gel and named this compound. Today, the International Aloe Science Council (IASC) has a program that verifies whether or not products contain aloe vera gel based on a test for acemannan.

Dr. Sinnott expressed his concerns about numerous poor-quality aloe products in the marketplace: "Such products have typically been found to contain little (or no) aloe vera gel; they do not have the expected sugar profiles or are contaminated with aloe latex. Aloe latex, the bitter yellow sap from the outer skin of the leaf, contains hydroxyanthracene derivatives, including aloins, and is an OTC laxative drug. Numerous organizations that express concerns about the safety of aloe vera gel intake often err by including effects of whole-leaf products known to contain aloin." A high-quality aloe gel product should contain less than 10 ppm aloin.

To validate product quality, Mannatech has submitted its aloe vera gel powders to an independent laboratory for detailed analyses and also conducts ingredient analyses in-house. Mannatech’s product suppliers are approved through a vendor-qualification process that includes supplier questionnaires, on-site audits, certificate of analysis verification of initial lots, and evaluation of subsequent lots upon receipt. An independent laboratory recently tested all Mannatech’s products that contain aloe gel powders to ensure they are aloin-free. This laboratory, which is able to detect aloin at levels as low as 0.6 ppm, was not able to detect it in any Mannatech product.

Recognizing the key role that its aloe vera gel powders play in product efficacy, Mannatech has been consistently expanding the aloe vera gel scientific literature. During the past decade, Mannatech scientists have published articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented posters about aloe vera gel at scientific meetings, particularly the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine’s Annual Natural Supplements Conference. These studies have described:

  • Digestion of aloe gel by human fecal bacteria. Preliminary data from this research received first prize at the Scripps 4th Annual Conference’s pre-clinical research poster competition in 2007.

  • Aloe gel chemical profiles (molecular weight [MW], total carbohydrates and other constituents) and carbohydrate composition (total sugars and free sugars), research conducted by carbohydrate chemistry experts at the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, Athens, Georgia.
  • Digestion of aloe gel by specific GI-tract bacterial enzymes.
  • Effects of processing techniques on aloe gel saccharide composition, MW and particle-size distributions.

Since 1994, Mannatech has been an industry leader in the development of many innovative, beneficial aloe vera gel-based dietary supplements and skin care products. The fragile component of aloe is the acetylated mannans (or acemannan), critical to Mannatech's glyconutritional products.

Dr. Bill McAnalley is the scientist who first discovered and revealed a key component of Aloe vera inner leaf gel-acemannan. He developed an aloe gel powder that was rich in acemannan — Manapol® Powder and then included it in the world's first glyconutritional dietary supplement: Mannatech's Ambrotose® complex.

Years ago, our Manapol supplier in Costa Rica sent Dr. Bill McAnalley a big box of un-potted aloe vera plants. An R&D Team member rescued them one day, and offered to pot them for whomever wanted them. The two plants she kept in her house kept producing large numbers of aloe offspring (pups), which she often brought into the office so they could find new homes.

Mannatech’s Jann Bishop, has quite a green thumb and has been growing many of these aloe pups, and their pups. She brought her plants into the office for the winter and decorated them for Christmas. Look how they’ve grown! The decorated plants are most likely the great-grandchildren of the originals that were sent to Bill!

Watch this beautiful video from the farm in Costa Rica where they very carefully harvest the aloe that is used to make our Manapol powder, exclusive to Mannatech.
